Karen Koehler

Outside the Office

Karen loves to hike, ski, and is a movie fanatic. She has a Brittany Spaniel named Nala who she runs with every day.

Karen Koehler aka β€œThe Velvet Hammerℒ” is known for being creative, tenacious and absolutely fierce in trial.  She cares deeply about her clients and believes in the power of their real life stories.  She is unscripted, unrehearsed, and fights from the heart.

In 1985 when she was 25, Karen began practicing law.  But she started learning the craft at age 18 while working as a paralegal for her mother who was a general practitioner in the suburbs of north Seattle.  In the late 80s, Karen moved into the field of insurance defense where she practiced on and off for nine years while raising her young family of three daughters – Cristina, Alysha, and Noelle.  During that time she also worked for Tom Chambers for three years.  He became her mentor in plaintiff law before ascending to the State Supreme Court bench.  In 1997 Karen began practicing law with Pat LePley in Bellevue until 2004 when he prodded her to move on to the Stritmatter firm.  That same year Karen received the President’s award from the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association (now Washington State Association for Justice).  And in 2005 Karen received WSTLA’s Trial Lawyer of the Year Award. Karen eventually served as President of WSTLA from 2007-2008 while her children were still in junior high and high school.

Karen has a special place in her heart for representing families who have lost loved ones due to intentional or negligent acts.  This ranges from Kime v. City of Seattle, the wrongful death settlement for Kristopher Kime’s family that found the city responsible for enhancing the danger of the 2001 Seattle Mardi Gras riots; to the three death cases included in the Ride the Ducks Aurora Bridge trial in 2019.

Karen is a prolific speaker to plaintiff lawyer groups around the country.  She has written several national legal treatises. And was an adjunct professor at the University of Washington School of Law for seven years.
