In order to select a fair and impartial jury, Judge Shaffer made a special request for 1,000 jurors.  400 responded.  Many of the jurors could not serve in a four-month trial due to hardship and were excused.  One and a half weeks were spent engaging in voir dire (interview) with the remaining panel members.  Twelve jurors and four alternates were selected.  At the conclusion of the four-month trial, two alternates remained and were excused.  The remaining 12 jurors deliberated for nine days before reaching the verdict.
